FBI Recommends Small Office and Home Office Router Reboot

Your internet connection is very likely through a Small Office or a Home Office router and, if it is, the FBI recommends that you reboot it.

FBI: “Foreign cyber actors have compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers and other networked devices worldwide. The actors used VPNFilter malware to target small office and home office routers. The malware is able to perform multiple functions, including possible information collection, device exploitation, and blocking network traffic.”

Cisco Talos Intelligence Group, one of the largest commercial threat intelligence teams in the world, says at least 500,000 routers have been infected.

F.B.I. recommendations:

  1. Reboot the router (this will temporarily disrupt the malware, if it is present).
  2. Upgrade the device’s firmware to the latest available.
  3. Select a new secure password for your router.
  4. Disable any remote-management settings.
